The Children’s Pool
Just outside of the Village of La Jolla, north of the Park, is The Children’s Pool (850 Coast Boulevard), which is a popular destination for tourists and residents alike. This is a small beach with a seawall partially blocking the incoming Pacific Ocean waves.
Originally designed as a protected swimming area, more recently harbor seals and sea lions have moved into the area to make their own La Jolla homes. The harbor seals sit on the seawall, largely oblivious to the stares and picture-taking of the passers by. There seems to be unending controversy over whether to protect the seals or scare them away. We say let the seals stay!
Like all of La Jolla, the Children’s Pool is a gorgeous example of Southen California coastline. The views are incredible, and the sunsets are magnificent. Smaller nearby beaches include Shell Beach to the North and Wipeout beach to the South toward Birdrock. Surfing in the area is excellent, but surfers need to be careful to paddle out past the shoals and be careful when exiting the water.
The residential neighborhood of Birdrock begins just blocks away as you head toward Pacific Beach. If you are interested in houses or housing in the area, the La Jolla Realtors who specialize in the area are glad to help with MLS listings of homes and investment properties for sale. Parking in and around La Jolla Village is limited. Careful of the parking meters… they allow a maximum of three hours per parking space and the meter readers are very active in the area. Park a few blocks away on a residential street where there are no parking meters. You will enjoy the walk through La Jolla Village, to the Children’s Pool and to La Jolla Cove.
Large Groups: The basic rule of thumb is that any gathering of over 75 people requires a permit from the Park and Recreation Department. A permit is also required for a wedding, water event, athletic event, voice and/or music amplification, or use of special setup equipment (such as an inflatable party jump, dunk tank, canopy, etc.) For permit information call Coastline Parks at (619) 221-8901 .
