The community of Scripps Ranch prides itself on being a very civic minded, wholesome neighborhood. Many families choose to live in here because the elementary, middle, and high schools (part of the San Diego Unified School District) have an excellent reputation for quality teaching and academic achievement.There are approximately 11,000 residences and estimated population just under 30,000 in zip code 92131. Zip code 92131 is located just East of Mira Mesa and the I-15 freeway, North of Miramar Air Station and South of Poway. It is only 16 miles to downtown San Diego and 13 miles to the coast. The community has its own library, fire station, and abundance of parks and recreation opportunities, including a newer neighborhood recreation center.
The neighborhood was first establishedin 1890 when former newspaperman EW Scripps and his sister Ellen Browning Scripps purchased a 400 acre ranch along what is today called Pomerado Road. They later added another 1200 acres to their ranch. When it was later sold, the neighborhood was subdivided into residential lots known for its rocky terrain with rolling hills, canyons and countryside views. Tall eucalyptus trees are a prominent feature.
The neighborhood has a lot of natural beauty, open spaces set aside for parks, wildlife preservation and trails. Located in the heart of the community Miramar Reservoir, a small lake surrounded by a near-perfect 5 mile loop which is popular with joggers, bicyclists, and roller bladers. Boats (canoes and rowboats) are available for rent, and the lake is loaded with bass, trout and catfish.
