You've made very good points here. The shark attack was certainly a tragedy, and hopefully will not happen again. If the seals were moved from the La Jolla Children's Pool would they simply go somewhere else in the area? Is the situation that out of natural balance that sharks are coming to an area where they would normally not go? Hopefully there is some research on being done at Scripps on that issue.

REASONS FOR REMOVAL OF SEALS 1. THEY ARE ATTRACTING DANGEROUS GREAT WHITE SHARKS --FIRST VICTIM WAS DAVE MARTIN OF SOLANA BEACH. THE ENTIRE SEAL POPULATION MUST BE CULLED IMMEDIATELY IN CALIFORNIA. 2. MRS SCRIPPS BUILT THE BREAKWATER FOR CHILDREN TO HAVE A SAFE BEACH EXPERIENCE. 3. WHEN MORE SHARK ATTACKS TAKE PLACE THE TOURIST REVENUE IN LA JOLLA WILL TAKE A BIG HIT. 4. THE SMELL FROM THE SEALS IS ALREADY CAUSING TOURISTS TO CHOOSE DEL MAR OVER LA JOLLA. 5. THE FIGHTS BETWEEN FINATICAL CONSERVATIONISTS MAY LEAD TO VIOLENCE AND EVEN GOD FORBID--MURDER.

Thanks for the clarification Jan. The court order seems ludicrous, and I'm glad to know that the city also opposes it. I must have misinterpreted a report in the San Diego Union Tribune, or else it was shoddy reporting. Best wishes with your legislative effort to change the terms. And Happy Independence Day!

A judge ordered the City of San Diego to develop a plan to remove the seals. The City opposed this, but complied because it was a court order.

The City is seeking state legislation to change the terms of a state trust which was the basis for the judge's order. If the legislation is enacted, the reason for the order will be eliminated and we will ask the court to vacate its order. Unless and until that legislation is passed and the court vacates its order, the City must do what the judge orders us to do.

The legislation is SB 428 carried by State Senator Christine Kehoe. You can view the bill and its analysis at
http://www.assembly.ca.gov/acs/acsframeset2text.htm.

That site will also give you the names and contact info for members of the legislature should you want to make your views known.

Thank you.

Leave the seals alone! They are a delight and we are fortunate to have the opportunity to enjoy them. There certainly are plenty of other beaches in San Diego where the people can go who want to take a swim.
